A missed period. Tender breasts. A wave of nausea that catches you off guard.
Any of these can leave you wondering whether you’re pregnant. When you take a pregnancy test matters more than most people realize, and testing too soon can leave you with more questions than answers.
McDowell Pregnancy Care Center offers no-cost, confidential pregnancy testing in Marion, so schedule an appointment as soon as you’re ready for a clear answer.
When to Take a Pregnancy Test
If your cycle is fairly regular, testing is most accurate the day after a missed period, or a day or two after that. If your cycle is irregular, waiting a bit longer improves your chances of getting an accurate result.
Here are a few more things that can improve the accuracy of your result:
- Test first thing in the morning, when urine is most concentrated
- Follow the instructions exactly, including how long to wait before checking the result
- Check the expiration date before testing
Why Timing Affects Accuracy
Pregnancy tests detect human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), a hormone that the placenta begins producing once a fertilized egg implants in the uterus. In early pregnancy, hCG roughly doubles every two to three days, so testing too early in that window can mean there isn’t enough hormone yet for a test to detect.
That’s the most common reason for a false-negative result, not a flaw in the test itself.
If Your Test Is Negative but Your Period Hasn’t Started
A negative result doesn’t always settle the question. If your period still hasn’t arrived after a few days, testing again gives hCG more time to rise into a detectable range.
If repeat tests keep coming back negative and your period still hasn’t started, a healthcare provider can help you sort out what else might be going on.
If Your Test Is Positive
A positive result confirms that pregnancy hormones are present, but it doesn’t tell you everything about the pregnancy on its own. An ultrasound provides that information: how far along the pregnancy is, whether it is developing inside the uterus, and whether it is progressing as expected.
That information is about the pregnancy itself, and it can help you and your provider understand your situation clearly.
McDowell Pregnancy Care Center offers both pregnancy testing and ultrasounds at our Marion office, along with the chance to talk through your results one-on-one.
